Week 4 - Semaine 4

Dad

This fine looking gentleman is “mi padre”.  He’s curious, has a passion for the Spanish language, loves to travel, and, although he’s been retired for a few years, has never been busier.  There are many ways I could have photographed him today, and we did try a few things, but I liked this photo the best from the bunch we made.  He has always had many house plants around and given that I photographed him in his home, it’s no surprise that he’s surrounded by them for this photo.

Week 3 - Semaine 3

Alissa

When I first learned that Alissa wanted me to photograph her, she had a full head of pink hair! We finally got around to it, and had a great evening taking a whole bunch of photos, many of which are really nice.

Week 2 - Semaine 2

Joseph

Joseph and I both work on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and we were both on the same workshop last week.  I asked him if he’d be open for a portrait photography session at the break, and he agreed right away.  I was surprised to learn that he already knew that I was into photography.  I like Joseph’s poise and demeanor.  To me, he projects calm and confidence.

Week 1 - Semaine 1

Louise

This project almost didn’t happen.  On december 24, on Christmas eve, I was holding my D700 by the foot of the 70-200 lens, when the foot let go and my camera crashed onto my mother’s ceramic floor in the kitchen.  The body of the camera cracked and the camera didn’t work anymore.  Fortunately, a friend of mine lent me her D7000 so that I could do the shoot this week.  I only hope I get my camera back from Nikon soon!

This is my wife who wanted a winter portrait.  We went to the bird feeders in a nearby forest and took quite a few shots, many of which were really nice.  I had a tough time picking my favourite, but settled on this one.

  1. Camera: Nikon D7000
  2. Aperture: f/1.8
  3. Exposure: 1/800th
  4. Focal Length: 85mm

After much thought and after fully recovering from my Project 365 for 2010, I’ve decided that I need another photographic challenge. So, for 2012, I will be photographing someone every week and posting my favourite here.

Two reasons for this: First, I want to get better at photographing people. Practice makes perfect, as they say. Second, I really enjoy photographing people.

Here are the rules I’m going to abide by:

- As January 1 is a Sunday, my People Photos need to be taken between the Sunday and following Saturday, every single week of 2012. This means that I should be able to post my weekly photo on the following Sunday.

- I may have more than one shoot a week, but a person may only appear once in my project.

That’s it for rules. I’m giving myself a bit of flexibility here… Call it experience :-)

Feel free to let me know what you think as I post these photos. I am certain I have a fair bit of learning to do, and your constructive criticism is more than welcome.

It’s been almost 6 months since I finished my Photo a Day project for 2010, and quite frankly, I haven’t done all that much photography since then.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love it!  But I needed a bit of time to recharge my photography batteries.

I’ve decided to keep my blog here on Tumblr.  I love the community here and the platform for blogging is pretty darn cool.  So I hope you hang around a bit and come along for the ride.  I don’t exactly know where I’m going to go with this blog, but I’m going somewhere!  I suspect things will get a little clearer as we move along.  Now, what this blog needs is a new name…

Well, I’m done!  I’ve completed my Photo a Day project for 2010!  Yay!  This is my grand finale, and I have to admit, I’m pretty pleased with it.  I put in quite a few hours to get to the point of being able to take the shot.  This is simply water with food colouring in it, but it goes everywhere, so I need to clean up after each attempt.  Even the ceiling needs to be wiped down…

I want to thank all my friends and followers who visited my Tumblr blog over the past year.  Your encouragement was more helpful than you can imagine.  Not all my photos were worth much, but I can assure you that my photography has come a long way since January 1, 2010.  Happy New Year to each and every one of you!  May the New Year bring you health, happiness and prosperity!
